Sojourn Church is hosting a week at Safe Harbor Homeless Shelter February 16-23, 2019. This is our second year caring for the local homeless population, by staffing one week at the permanent shelter located at 517 Wellington St in Traverse City. Serving at Safe Harbor (SH) is a very rewarding experience. All shifts come with training, and first-time volunteers are always paired with a seasoned host. A number of jobs and shifts are needed, they include:
       ~EVENING VOLUNTEERS are the voices, ears and hearts of the shelter. Volunteers assist the Sojourn leader and SH staff with the operation of the shelter, share dinner with guests, provide companionship and participate in the special evening activities Sojourn is planning. Shift: 5:30-10pm
       ~DINNER LEADERS recruit, schedule, and coordinate the team of Dinner Volunteers to prepare a hot meal for about 90 guests. Dinner menus and the food needed have already been taken care of to make it easy for you. Shift: 4-8pm
      ~DINNER VOLUNTEERS prep and serve the meal, wash and put away dishes, clean and sanitize the kitchen and serving area, and take care of any leftover food. Detailed kitchen info will be provided to meal crews. Shift: 4-8pm
     ~OVERNIGHT HOST MAN AND WOMAN assist with the “winding down” of the evening and take turns monitoring the shelter overnight, making an hourly “sweep” of the area and light cleaning, laundry, facility duties and taking out trash. In the morning, volunteers prepare coffee for the breakfast. Overnight volunteers sleep in shifts. A safe, private sleeping area is provided for overnight volunteers and a Goodwill Staffer is on duty at all times the guests are present. Shift: 10pm-6am
    ~OVERNIGHT AUXILIARY VOLUNTEERS are two people who sleep at SH but are available if extra assistance is needed. Shift: 10pm-6am
    ~MORNING LEADER provides coordination of the Continental style breakfast, directs cleaning volunteers and helps with guest tote management and assists the Goodwill Staffer as needed. Shift: 5:45-8am
    ~BREAKFAST HOST manages the breakfast crew, serving the continental breakfast. Duties include setting up, monitoring, and putting away breakfast foods, washing and putting away dishes, and cleaning up kitchen and dining tables. Shift 6-8am
   ~CLEAN UP HOSTS help ensure guests are up and ready for departure by 7:45AM and clean the facility. Shift 7:30-9:30am
