Fixed Hours are specific times during the day that are set aside for meeting with God.
While Christians throughout the ages have committed to different times throughout their days, the Fixed Hours we are choosing are 7:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 7:00 PM. We’re choosing to do Fixed Hours for several reasons: One, because it is good for our souls to hear God’s Word and to feast on it, to listen to God’s voice and talk to him. Two, because our days can often get away from us, and we are helped by having set times to commune with God—to re-orient our lives around Jesus and his life. Three, because fixed hours can be done together. They remind us that we are not merely individuals following Jesus, but a family—a body being grown up together into the image of Jesus.
But we’re choosing to do Fixed Hours now because of the unique circumstances we find ourselves in. Our circumstances are disruptive, which means we could use some steady rhythms to help us look to God and be still before him. Our circumstances are also an opportunity, since we don’t have anywhere else to go! So we’re going to press into the disruption, believing God is giving us an opportunity to slow down and listen to his voice together.
this is what we plan to do…
The plan is simple: beginning Thursday, March 26th, you’re invited to join us in this Zoom meeting room. If you need it, the Meeting ID is 327-807-140. There’s no prep work beforehand and no homework afterwards! Just show up, join in, and that’s it. Here’s a rundown of what’s happening at each fixed hour:
7 AM: Seeking God’s Face - we’ll use the prayer guide Seeking God’s Face: Praying with the Bible through the Year, written and compiled by Philip F. Reinders. This prayer guide is set up in a liturgical format, with times of Scripture reading, silence, meditation, and prayer for you to participate in. [15-20 minutes]
11 AM: Lord, Hear Our Prayer - we’ll join together for a time of guided prayer, praying with and for one another. Come ready with specific prayer requests: for yourself, for others, for our community, or for the globe. [30 minutes]
7 PM: Reading The Psalms - this one’s pretty self-explanatory! We’ll read a Psalm together. [10-15 minutes]
We are currently committing to do these Fixed Hours during the time of the quarantine, which would take us through Monday, April 13th. But…you know the drill by now…things are changing fast, so we’re holding those plans lightly!
If you have any questions, email Ben Whipple and he’ll help you out.
